Our Top Winter Skincare Tips For Dry Skin

Winter is here! And so are chapped lips, dry hands and dull skin. The change in the weather, exposure to indoor heaters, hot showers and harsh wind can make your skin dry and dull, meaning it needs some extra love during the cooler months. So now is the time to get your skincare routine together.

Here are our top tips and favourite skincare products for keeping your skin hydrated and glowing all year round.

Avoid hot showers
While taking a steamy hot shower at the end of a chilly day might be one of your favourite things to do, it can actually wreak havoc on your skin. Water that is too hot can unfortunately dehydrate your skin, so turn the temperature down just a bit and make sure to moisturise immediately after your shower to avoid dry and cracked skin.

Choose a gentle cleanser
Opt for a more mild face cleanser this winter. Cream or oil-based formulas are generally more gentle than foaming or soap-based cleansers and won't dry out your skin. We love Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. Same goes for your body. Rather than your usual fragranced soap or body wash, choose something that is more gentle so you don’t irritate your skin. Your skin should feel smooth and hydrated after washing.

I’m sure you know this already but it is so important! Apply a thick rich moisturiser all over your body as soon as you are out of the shower for soft smooth skin. Also, make the effort to apply night cream or rosehip oil to your face before going to bed. We love Essano Rosehip Moisture Restorative Night Crème. If you are struggling with flaky dry skin even after moisturising daily, try switching to a body oil instead.

Use a serum
The key to boosting your skin’s hydration is applying a serum underneath your moisturiser. Serums are usually more effective than moisturisers for hydrating as they penetrate deeper into the skin. Serums are essential for aging skin and everyone should consider adding one to their winter skincare routine. Try Natio Rosewater Hydration Antioxidant Serum.

Remember the sunscreen!
I know it’s winter, but that doesn’t mean you can neglect sunscreen. UV rays still exist and can cause damage, subsequently ageing your skin, especially if you spend a fair bit of time outside. Apply it under your makeup before you leave the house each day. Your skin will thank you. Try UV-IQ Spf 50+ Hydrating Facial Sunscreen Milk.

Don't over exfoliate
While getting rid of dry dead skin cells is the key to smoother skin, overdoing it in winter can result in dryness, redness and stinging. Keep your exfoliating to a maximum of twice a week. Use a mild product as harsh exfoliants can damage your skin's protective moisture barrier. And always remember to follow up with a rich moisturiser.

Change up your foundation
In summer we tend to go for matte foundations to minimise oil and shine, but this can dry out your face during the cooler months. In winter when your skin is dry and potentially dehydrated, opt for a foundation with a dewy finish. It will assist in hydrating your skin, it will last longer and your skin will look fresh all day long. Try Maybelline Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation.

Look After Your Lips
Don’t lick dry and sore lips! Keep a lip balm on hand at all times to keep your lips hydrated and soft. We love Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm.

Stay hydrated
Seems obvious, right? Staying hydrated on the inside is just as important as making sure you are hydrated on the outside. Make sure you drink lots of water, aim for one or two glasses more than usual during winter.
