Our Tips For Protecting Your Hair During Summer
Summer is great. The days are longer and warmer, but the conditions that come along with the warmer weather may not be so great for your hair. We put on sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and cover up our skin, but all too often we are not taking any precautions to protect our hair when we go outside. Increased exposure to chlorine, salt water, and sun can lead to damaged and dull hair, resulting in split ends and faded colour. Not the look we were going for. Thankfully, there are some preventative measures you can take to help keep your hair looking healthy and luscious all summer long.
As the sun can cause drying of the hair and split ends, getting a trim just before summer can save your hair from becoming excessively damaged. Also, booking in regular trims every six to eight weeks will keep away the split ends and will keep your hair feeling healthy and soft.
Do not wash your hair before swimming. This will strip your hair of its natural oils, meaning your hair will be more likely to become damaged in the water. Rather, wet your hair and apply some leave-in conditioner. This will help create a barrier so your hair won't absorb as much of the chlorine and salt that it would otherwise. Choose a leave-in conditioner that contains SPF for maximum protection.
Wearing a hat when you are out in the sun for prolonged periods of time will help protect your hair from unwanted sun damage and preserve your colour. This also protects your scalp from becoming dry, sunburnt and flaky. If you are swimming and don’t wear a hat, tie your hair back into a ponytail to protect your scalp from burning.
Hair is more fragile when wet, so after swimming put on some detangling spray and minimise breakage by brushing with a wide tooth comb. Later on, wash your hair using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Make sure to incorporate regular deep conditioning treatments into your beauty routine as well to help nourish and restore moisture in your hair.
Avoid unnecessary heat. Avoid the heated styling products and let your hair air dry. Your hair is dealing with enough heat throughout the summer, it doesn’t need anymore.
Follow these tips and go and make the most of summer while it lasts!
