Save Or Splurge? Furniture You Should Spend And Save On

Whether you have just bought a new house or you are looking to update your current one, we all know buying furniture and appliances can be an expensive task. But where can you save and what should you spend the extra money on? Read on to find out whether to save or splurge.

Splurge:

Couch
Your couch should be one of the more expensive items in your home as it is one of the most used pieces of furniture. Choose a comfortable, high quality piece and make sure you buy one in a classic style rather than one in a trendy colour as it is bound to go out of fashion in a couple of years.

Mattress
Similar to your couch, spending the extra money on a good quality and comfortable mattress is essential, considering we spend at least seven hours per night in our bed. A good mattress should last for many years, so make sure to test it out before committing to buy to make sure the mattress suits you and your needs.

Flooring
Investing in good quality flooring, especially in high traffic areas is so important. Make sure you consider your lifestyle and location and opt for something like laminate, especially if you have kids and/or pets. Also, flooring isn’t easy or cheap to replace, so make sure you get it right the first time!

Appliances
Maintenance on large appliances like fridges and dishwashers can be a costly exercise. Investing in good quality appliances for your home that will last much longer may even work out to be the cheaper option in the long run if you encounter problems with your budget appliances.

Save:

Desks, Dining Table and Side Tables
These days you can buy beautiful tables and desks for cheap from places like Target, Kmart, and Ikea. Tables and desks can be easily cleaned, don’t suffer much wear and tear and do the same job as their more expensive counterparts.

Lighting
Cute lamps and decorative lights like chandeliers can be found all over the place, and whether they are expensive or a bargain buy, they both serve the same purpose. You can find nearly identical products in every price range, anyway.

Anything for the Kids
Furniture in your kids room is bound to be outgrown or uncool before it falls apart. So save on bed frames, quilt covers, desks and bookcases, and look to DIY when decorating your child’s room.

Rugs
If you are looking to put a rug in your living room or bedroom, make sure to look for a bargain.  While rugs are well used with people walking over them and often spilling things on them, a cheap rug and an expensive one will both become damaged or stained fairly quickly.

Decorative Items
Think throws, decorative cushions and pieces of art. Our tastes can change quickly and so can trends, so don’t splurge on a bright coloured canvas or expensive cushions. I guarantee you will regret it when you want to update your home in a year or two.

While this can be a helpful guide, looking at the items that concern your health and pieces that will get the most use will help you determine when to spend and what to save on.
