How To Keep Your Flowers Fresh For Longer
A bunch of flowers can brighten any space, but unfortunately, they don’t last forever. Although, many flowers will last a week or even longer with the right care. So, to enjoy your blooms for as long as possible, read on for some essential tips and tricks.
Clean the vase
Ensure the vase you choose for your flowers is thoroughly cleaned. This gets rid of any bacteria that could harm your flowers.
Put your flowers in warm water
Flowers love warm water as it can help them absorb more moisture. This can assist in increasing their lifespan.
Change the water regularly
An obvious one, but changing the water on a regular basis will help your flowers flourish for longer. Make sure to change the water immediately if it becomes cloudy.
Trim the stems
Cut the stems of your flowers at an angle to begin with and then repeat every 1-2 days. Cutting a couple of centimetres from the bottom of the stems underwater is another tip for helping the flowers to absorb more moisture.
Keep the leaves out of the water
Remove any leaves at the bottom of the stems that may become submerged in the water. Leaves that sit under the water level will rot and cause bacteria to grow and infect your flowers.
Add some flower food
If you didn’t get a flower food sachet with your flowers you can easily make your own at home. Try one teaspoon of sugar, a squeeze of lemon juice and a couple of drops of bleach. This mixture helps to control fungi and bacteria that can reduce the lifespan of your flowers.
Put the flowers in a cool place
Make sure you position your flowers out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources and out of drafts. Flowers thrive best in a cool place.
Remove wilting flowers as soon as possible
Dying flowers give off ethylene gas, much like some fruits, which can bother the other flowers. To give your flowers the best chance of surviving, remove the dead flowers as soon as possible.
