How To Beat The Afternoon Slump Without Coffee

We all know the routine. You start the day feeling energetic, motivated and productive, but as the afternoon rolls around you fall into this daily slump where productivity declines, your mood decreases and you find yourself struggling to concentrate.

But why does this happen, you might ask? You know you get the right amount of sleep, you eat relatively well and you drink enough water but at around 3pm the thought of working becomes almost unbearable and your body is just begging for a nap. It’s perfectly normal to experience this feeling thanks to our internal body clock. You’ve been awake for over 7 hours at this point and the body’s stress hormone, cortisol, is beginning to drop with the body preparing for sleep.  

You begin to crave sugar and caffeine, giving you an instant boost to help you survive the rest of the dreaded afternoon. But in reality, these cravings are short lived and will only sabotage your healthy efforts from earlier in the day. 

So how will you survive?

1. Get some fresh air
Soaking up the rays has endless benefits, including the ability to improve performance and mood. So get outside, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Taking this small break away will also give your eyes a well deserved rest after numerous hours of screen time.

2.  Exercise
Exercise releases endorphins and will not only help you get through the afternoon but will also burn some calories while you’re at it. So take it a step further go for a brisk walk outside, even if you are busy. It will make you more productive in the long run.

3. Water
Dehydration also has a tendency to make you feel tired, so make sure you drink lots of water during the day, including in the afternoon. It will do wonders for your body and will help beat those pesky cravings.

4. Snacks
